Tribute

Melquiades Guillen Gaspar, 76, of Bryan, passed away on Sunday, October 11, 2020.

Melquiades, a tenacious, strong, and humble man, was born on November 27, 1943, in Xilitla, San Luis Potosi, Mexico, to Antonio Gaspar and Maria Sebastiana Guillen. As the second oldest of 9 children, and the eldest son, Melquiades and his siblings, Paula, Emiliana, Luisa, Gloria, Sabina, Reyna, Vicenta, and Rogelio, enjoyed their childhood working the fields on the family ranch with their Dad. Although he only received an elementary level education, Melquiades was extremely intelligent and a master of all trades. At 18, Melquiades enlisted in the Mexican National Army and served for two years. During his time in the Army, he learned woodworking.

Carpentry became Melquiades' passion. By the time he finished his service, Melquiades opened up his own carpentry shop in Mexico. He sold carvings at the local restaurant, where archeologist, Charles Hollan, discovered him. Mr. Hollan asked Melquiades to come work with him in the United States as a sculptor. He recreated ancient Mayan and Aztec artifacts out of wood. Carpentry was his passion, and he continued working in carpentry with his work at Equity Real Estate, remodeling and fixing properties all over Bryan/College Station. From his experience, Melquiades knew how to build a house from the floor up, including electrical and plumbing work. He also loved collecting old furniture, fixing them, and bringing them back to life.

Melquiades married the love of his life, Maria Martinez, after they met at the Green Giant Plant in Forks, Wisconsin, where they both worked at the time. Maria and Melquiades blended their families with Melquiades bringing four children in to the family, Eloina, Hortencia, Noel, and Luis, and Maria contributing one child to the family, Lety. Melquiades and Maria then had two children together, Yolanda and Melquiades Jr. They made a beautiful life together. Melquiades was an amazing father to his children, always giving wonderful advice. He told them to always work hard for a better life, and that education is the key for a better future. He was an encouraging, caring, and loving Dad and husband.

Spending time with family was one of his favorite ways to spend his time away from Carpentry. He loved all family gatherings, especially Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. He was a jokester, always trying to make everyone around him smile and laugh! He also enjoyed mowing his yard with his John Deere tractor. An Aggie at heart, Melquiades would love to sport his aggie maroon gear!

Melquiades' life was one built around hard work, integrity, and passion. He worked hard to build his beautiful life with his family, and followed his dreams from a young age. Melquiades is a role model to his children, and will be remembered always with good thoughts.

Melquiades will be remembered by his seven children and their spouses, Eloina and Luis Corona, Hortencia and Miguel Zacarias, Lety and Angel Corpes, Yolanda and Ivan Sotelo, Noel and Gloria Gaspar, Luis Gaspar, and Melquiades Gaspar Jr; his seventeen grandchildren, Alicia, Hector, Giovanni, Stephanie, Noel, Sarahi, Ismael, Jesus, Israel, Rafael, Veronica, Angel, Nydia, Angelica, Yuriana, Cynthia, and Anthony; nine great-grandchildren, Yadrian, Aiyanah, Giovanni, Yandel, Andrew, Luis Enrique, Afan Francisco, Matthew Gregorio, and Santiago Sebastian.

He will be reunited with his wife and love of his life, Maria Martinez; and his parents, Antonio Gaspar and Maria Sebastiana Guillen.

The family would like to thank and acknowledge the kind care the doctors and nurses at the St. Joseph Regional Health Hospital, the ICU for their care and attention, and a special thanks to Nurse Tonya.
